Male Pattern Baldness: Dihydrotestosterone, Dutasteride, and Biotin

My Hair Loss Experience: I've had bangs for quite some time. I hardly exposed my hairline for any particular reason. Then one day, I decided to straighten my hair with a flat iron. Which means that you will have to section off hair. I brushed my hair clean back and noticed that my temples have receded about an inch back. My hairline was forming an “M” shape – typical of male pattern baldness. I quickly devised an action plan to tackle this problem before it got out of hand.

How Does Male Pattern Baldness Happen?
The culprit behind male pattern baldness is dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is
a male hormone that is made by the prostate gland, the testicles, and inside of the hair follicles. Dihydrotestosterone is a by-product of testosterone. Normally, it is a male hormone that makes part of male sexual development. Normal teens will experience an increased level of testosterone, with relatively low levels of dihydrotestosterone conversion. These individuals will not suffer from early, or extreme male pattern baldness. However, many men will also have increased levels of dihydrotestosterone conversion, which might translate to early male pattern baldness, or severe male pattern baldness later in their life. Dihydrotestosterone effects the hair follicles by shrinking them, subsequently leading to thinness and hair loss.

How To Stop Male Pattern Baldness: Inhibit Dihydrotestosterone Conversion
The key to halting male pattern baldness is to stop testosterone from converting into dihydrotestosterone, as well as remove the accumulation of dihydrotestosterone from the hair follicles.

Prescriptions for Male Pattern Baldness: Finasteride and dutasteride are both medicines that can be prescribed by your doctor to help reduce dihydrotestosterone. These medicines are known to be effective. “Propecia” is the brand name that uses Finasterine, and “Avodart”is the brand that uses Dutasteride. Inquire with your doctor for these medications.

Over The Counter (OTC) Medications for Male Pattern Baldness: I personally use medications that use minoxidil. Minoxidil is commonly used in the popular Rogaine medications, as well as Aromatase 7. It halts the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. I personally use Aromatase 7. I have no personal preferences when it comes to these OTC medications, but they both use the minoxidil as the active ingredient.

DermaRoller for Hair Loss: A dermaroller uses small spikes to puncture the skin. These wounds are extremely small. They are commonly used to help with stretch marks, scarring, and they are also noted in helping promote hair growth. I use the .5mm dermaroller on my balding areas. I then apply Aromatase 7 right on the “wound”. It is believed that the dermaroller allows minoxidil to penetrate deeper into the skin, subsequently interact with the hair follicles.

When it comes to washing hair, I use Avalon Organics Biotin B-Complex Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner. These are formulated with Biotin and Saw Palmetto. Biotin is a natural vitamin made by the body to aid in the creation of keratin – the “stuff” that makes up your hair and nails. Saw palmetto is a natural inhibitor of dihydrotestosterone. The topical application of these active ingredients has not been peer-reviewed, but it is suppose to help reduce dihydrotestosterone on the scalp. I use a hair massager while shampooing to help increase blood circulation to the hair follicles. This will help promote hair growth.

Biotin Supplements for Male Pattern Baldness
I also take a Biotin supplement. Male pattern baldness is a comprehensive ailment that will require a comprehensive approach to cure. Attacking male pattern baldness internally and externally will help improve your chances of winning the battle against baldness. When it comes to dosages, I take a daily pill that contains 5,000 micrograms of the active ingredient. After a two month break-in period, use a pill that contains 10,000 micrograms of the active ingredient. Don't worry about overdosing, for surplus biotin is secreted by the process of urination.

I will soon have an update. But I will tell you this: My results have blown my expectations. I manage to grow my hairline back, as well as experience massive growth spurts – all within a year's time.

  1. Same thing with what you said baldness is one of the top nightmares for men, they usually feel down and depressed having this one. According to what I've read from an article about saw palmetto where it is a good alternative to try saw palmetto that may possibly help produce a new hair for men loosing their hair strands. I think it is worthy to try and thanks for sharing this one.
